Bruggeman, Dan

Nebraska native Dan Bruggeman teaches in the fine art department at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. He has been awarded numerous grants, including the Minnesota State Arts Board Grants in 1993 and 1996, an Arts Midwest/NEA Visual Art Grant in 1994, and a McKnight Foundation Grant in 1997. Dan seeks to use his paintings to reveal both the discreet and indiscreet relationships humans have developed with nature. Of his newest body of work, Bruggeman has written: “these paintings represent landmarks of human invention. Hovering between the optimism of modernity and the irony of post-modernity, these representations of landscape exist as an embodiment of the tension between man and nature, but also explore the human urge to create visible markers of identity and place.”

The paintings in this exhibit represent landmarks of human invention. Hovering between the optimism of modernity and the irony of post-modernity, these representations of the contemporary landscape exist as an embodiment of the tension between man and nature, but also explore the human urge to create visible markers of identity and place.

Cicero referred to this condition of the landscape as “second nature”; a setting that has been acted upon and interacted with by humans to shape its presence. These images are also somewhat romantic representations of a certain kind of scenic beauty that accepts the evidence that we are well past the idea of an objective window to a natural world. Isolated, but accessible, these paintings instead offer images of places that exist as destinations and reflect an idiomatic history of memory and narrative.

The transient relationship we have with this kind of landscape is much more like an ongoing event than an actual artifact. Whether shaped by architects or eccentrics, these landscapes exist as a reflection of the deep human need for entertainment, amusement and an orientation to place. We rely on these places to evolve in order to project a record of our habitation.
