Abstract Dreams

Groveland Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of new paintings by Minneapolis artist, Carolyn Brunelle. Brunelle, a native Minnesotan currently maintains a studio in the Midway neighborhood of St. Paul. She has exhibited throughout the state for 30 years and her work is included in numerous private and local corporate collections including Stinson Leonard Street, Piper Jaffray, Ameriprise Financial, Travelers, Wells Fargo and Plymouth Church.

Brunelle’s abstract images are richly colored and loosely painted. In her newest work, compositions of bold shapes and brushwork move to a palpable beat, as the artist allows the materials and their energetic application to take center stage. Brunelle’s organic technique involves layering several coats of paint on the canvas, then intuitively scraping and sanding the paint away until an image emerges that suggests movement, dance, and joy. She writes of her process, “It is a subconscious connection between experimentation and artistic judgement. It is an act of faith. Creating art is not static. I relate to the unexpected, the surprise that keeps me on my toes.”
