La Nuit Américaine
.
Groveland Gallery is pleased to present La Nuit Américaine, an exhibition of new gouache paintings by Greg Graham, opening Saturday, July 19, 2025. Graham grew up in Watervliet, New York. He received his BA and MA from the State University of New York at Albany, and his MFA from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Graham has been the recipient of numerous awards, including grants from the Jerome Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board. He lives and works in Saint Paul.
Graham’s work is characterized by its cinematic air and narrative implications, expressive through color, composition, & minutiae. Inspired by the manufactured elements of American popular culture and the energy of the “nighttime,” this exhibition is a continuation of Graham’s work with painting everyday events and ordinary places. These paintings are snapshots of occurrences that rarely register in our consciousness. Of this work, Graham explains:
“La Nuit Américaine is…
…French for American Night.
…the name given to the early Hollywood practice of filming night scenes with darkening
filters during daylight.
…a film by François Truffaut that, among other things, reflects upon the artificiality of
cinema, and questions whether art is more important than life to those who make it.
The paintings in this series respond to the multiple connotations of this expression.”
The artist will be present at the opening reception on Saturday, July 19 from 2-5 pm. The exhibition runs concurrently with Double Vision: Stereoscopic Textiles by Tim Harding. Greg Graham will give an artist talk at Groveland Gallery on Saturday, August 16, starting at 3 pm. Both shows continue through August 30, 2025.
