The Alsea River

.

3Groveland Gallery is pleased to present The Alsea River, an exhibition of new drawings by Joyce Lyon, opening October 18. Originally from New York, Lyon has resided in Minnesota for over 50 years. She was a founding member of the Women’s Art Registry of Minnesota (WARM) and has been the recipient of numerous awards, including: three Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowships, a Jerome MCBA Book Arts Grant, and a Fulbright-Hays Grant. Her work has been exhibited and collected throughout the United States for nearly 50 years.

This latest series of work introduces a new location — initially less familiar to Lyon but quickly capturing her gaze with tactile vitality and abundant inspiration. Her connection to water sustains, as her practice reveals a deep sensitivity and fluency between artist and place. Deliberate, knowing, and sharply attuned to value and color, Lyon translates the magic of place into her work. She writes:

“A friend in Oregon introduced me to the Alsea River, a wild and narrow river winding between Corvallis and the coast. The river is shallow and twisting. Different depths and strata of rock make for stripes of subtly different color. In my work, which focuses on the intersection of place and memory, usually I respond to places I know well, but the Alsea seduced me. The spring day was glorious, there was luminosity and shadow, a sense of the moment and of forever. The drawings in “The Alsea River” are the result.”

The artist will be present at the opening reception on Saturday, October 18 from 2-5 pm. Joyce Lyon will give an artist talk at Groveland Gallery on Saturday, November 22, starting at 3 pm. The exhibition runs concurrently with Lost Mountain by Kit Wilson. Both shows continue through November 29, 2025.
