Prints & Paintings
.
Groveland Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Prints & Paintings, an exhibit of new work by Stuart Loughridge. This exhibit marks Loughridge’s first solo show at Groveland Gallery. As a studio painter, Loughridge works primarily with oil-paint and watercolors. He is also a devoted printmaker, well known for his etchings; and occasionally he is able to find time to create serigraphs. Stuart’s methods of creating a landscape are rooted in the 18th and 19th century practice of watercolor sketching, and he always carries a small watercolor kit with him. These treasured plein-air sketches are the raw material; the seeds for the finished studio creations, whether that be an etching, a watercolor, or an oil painting.
The artist states, “There is no such thing as a failed sketch: in the studio all the notes and sketches become useful as reference material in the building of a finished work of art. A piece may cite numerous sketches and notes… Sometimes there are extensive alterations from an original idea. It is this process of translating a sketch into a finished work of art that I find most intriguing. The final result is not necessarily an exact representation of a place, rather these works are the results of problems I have solved on how best to view a scene.”
The artist will be demonstrating the etching process on the front porch of the Gallery on September 18th and October 2nd, beginning at 1pm each day.
The artist will be present at the opening reception Saturday, September 11 from 12-5 pm. The opening reception and exhibition runs concurrently with Studio Window by Barbara McIlrath. Both shows continue through October 16, 2021
