Gravity
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 22, 2-5 p.m.
Chase’s work has changed significantly over the past 25 years. She has moved from representational imagery to abstract, and recently back to paintings with suggestions of the recognizable. Throughout it all, Chase has been inspired and informed by nature. Recently, what has captured her interest is the mimicry of organic patterning found in contemporary and historical ornamentation.
In her most recent body of work, Chase melds these ideas together, allowing viewers to move between familiar and unfamiliar forms within contemporary and organic motifs. This hybrid allows for layered connotations and a richness of mood.
A Minneapolis artist, Chase has exhibited her work at Groveland Gallery since 1984. She is currently a professor of painting at St. Catherine University. From 2005 to 2008, she served as the curator and program coordinator of Painting’s Edge, a contemporary painter’s workshop in Idyllwild, CA. Chase is a recipient of two Minnesota State Arts Board “Artist Assistance Grants” and was awarded an artists residency at Atelier Hӧherweg in Düsseldorf, Germany in 2006. Recently Chase traveled to Istanbul to study Turkish ornamentation. She has exhibited her work nationally and regionally, including shows at Joan Roebuck Gallery in Lafayette, CA, and Arc Gallery in Chicago.
The artist will be present at the opening reception Saturday, October 22nd from 2-5 pm. This opening reception and exhibition run concurrently with Visits & Revisits, an exhibition of new paintings by Anne DeCoster in the Annex Gallery. Both exhibitions continue through November 26.
