Brian Stewart

"He was a signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists, Plein Air Painters of America, California Art Club and the Oil Painters of America. A visual raconteur, he’s known and collected nationally for the story-telling quality of his paintings featuring the everyday, the overlooked and the under-appreciated."

- JoAnne Lorenz, Artist’s representative

Brian spent his life in the arts. From humble beginnings as a paste-up artist to graphic designer to art director and finally advertising agency owner, servicing regional clients like Arctic Cat Snowmobiles and Dayton Hudson Corporation.

He later returned to his childhood love, painting, doing both plein-air (outdoor) and studio work for private and corporate collections.

His early training was at The Art Center in Los Angeles and later at Atelier’s Lack and LeSueur in Minnesota where he learned the classic, academic fundamentals as they were taught in Paris a century ago.

Teaching was a big part of his art career. He taught at Pasadena JC , the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, The Atelier, lectured at the University of Minnesota and taught workshops throughout the U.S. and abroad. He released an instructional video and wrote a book on the rebirth of plein-air painting called “An Artist’s Journey Via Catalina”.

Brian had several one-man shows throughout the United States including two museum shows and numerous group shows. His work has been awarded and featured in major publications. He served as juror & lecturer for national plein air shows and was the subject of TV and on-line interviews. He was also a recipient of a Minnesota State Arts Board grant.
