New Paintings & Prints
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 10, 2-5 p.m.
Of his new work, Larry Welo writes: Most of my subjects are from around here. I sketch ideas on paper, and I photograph. Back in the studio, I begin utilizing the material that I gathered plus my imagination. I try to take chances when I work, attempting new approaches to see what happens. For me, one of the beauties of painting is the possibility to add more paint to the canvas. When I do that, I leave something showing of what preceded, suggesting that the creative process is a journey.
Welo grew up on the Iron Range in Hibbing, Minnesota and studied art and biology in Decorah, Iowa. For over thirty years, Welo has focused on creating etchings and is considered one of the premier printmakers of the Midwest. From his southern Wisconsin home, the artist maintains a printmaking studio in the historic Blue Mounds Opera House. In recent years, he has returned to his early interest in painting and enjoys the ability to work more spontaneously.
The artist will be present at the opening reception Saturday, June 10th from 2-5 pm. The opening reception and exhibition runs concurrently with Cities by Mark Horton. Both shows continue through July 15, 2017.
