Summer 2016 Exhibitions & Events

Groveland Gallery is pleased to present unique programming celebrating the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. This summer-long series of special exhibitions and events begins with two new shows: America’s River, an exhibition of paintings by Thomas Paquette, and Sea to Sea, a group show by Groveland Gallery artists and guests. The gallery will also host several events to accompany these exhibitions including four Plein Air Painting Workshops; a National Park Artist Talk & Slide Show by Groveland artists who have held artist residencies in national parks; and River of Ink: A History of Mississippi Travel Writing, a gallery talk by Patrick Coleman. In addition, the Plein Air SmackDown returns for its sixth year with a new location. This popular paint-off event is headed to the Mississippi riverfront.

Carolyn Brunelle

Opening Reception: Saturday, April 30, 2-5 p.m.

In this new body of work, Carolyn Brunelle continues her painterly exploration of the iconography of trees. Fascinated by her subject’s cultural and historical symbolism, Brunelle is also drawn to its formal complexities. Webs of leafless branches reach skyward against scumbled backgrounds, becoming nearly abstract in their tangles of bright color and rhythmic lines.

Dan & Lee Ross

Opening Reception: Saturday, April 30, 2-5 p.m.

Known for their use of simplified, geometric forms, earthy colors and rich materials, Dan and Lee Ross are most inspired by the seasonal changes they observe in their everyday surroundings. Elements of nature are transformed into elegant, modern designs, a creative process they credit to the landscape just beyond their front door.

Groveland Gallery is pleased to introduce a new event series called POP-UP.  These month-long, one-room shows will highlight work by local gallery and guest artists. This month’s POP-UP features new Groveland artist Amy Rice.

Dani Roach

Dani Roach continues to explore the intersection between representational imagery and abstract space. She pares down her compositions, pushing them further toward abstraction, focusing on the spaces between specific elements in the landscape.

In celebration of the Minnesota’s long tradition of plein air painting, this show highlights the unique styles and methods of four contemporary, local landscape painters who work outdoors.

Andrew Wykes

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 23, 2-5 p.m.

Painted with heavy impasto, Andrew Wykes builds his landscapes with a palette knife, introducing rhythmic lines and facets of lively color into his compositions. This contemporary approach to the genre of landscape paintings gives Wykes’ images a unique aesthetic. Rooted strongly in the gesture of drawing, his paintings reveal the energy and diversity of the landscapes to which he has traveled over the past two years.

James Conaway

For this exhibition, James Conaway continues to look to the local urban landscape to inform his paintings. He uses abstract compositions to illustrate the neighborhoods near his home and studio, both within the heart of the city.

Tozer returns to the figure in his newest body of work. Inspired by memories of his home along the coast of England, Tozer’s paintings capture the vitality, unpredictability and energy of life along a shoreline.

Rod Massey

In recent years, Massey’s attention has moved beyond the houses and yards of his quiet Southwest Minneapolis neighborhood. He has shifted his focus toward the more industrial areas of the local landscape – parking lots, railroad yards and abandoned grain elevators have now become subjects for Massey’s inspection.

2015 Summer Series

Groveland Gallery is pleased to announce the return of its annual summer series of special exhibitions and events. This summer-long spotlight on local artists begins on Friday, June 12 with the opening of two new exhibitions featuring gallery and guest artists. Several popular annual events will accompany the gallery’s summer-long group shows, including three weekend Porch Painter Demonstrations, a Figure-Drawing Workshop and the fifth annual Plein Air SmackDown. In addition, Groveland Gallery is participating in a Minneapolis Gallery Crawl on Thursday, June 18.

Love Letters from Artists

Gallery Talk by Peter Kramer, “Curator of Love Letters”: Thursday, July 30, 7-8 p.m.

Closing Party: Saturday, August 15, 2-5 p.m.

Love Letters from Artists, an invitational group show curated by St. Paul architect and artist Peter Kramer, presents over 80 letters from artists across the Twin Cities. Artists were invited to create a love letter of any sort and mail it to the gallery for exhibition. This show promises to be a unique celebration of the tradition of writing and receiving letters. Amongst the artists included in the show are Amy Rice, Ann Ledy, Betsy Byers, Brian Frink, Carolyn Swiszcz, L.K. Hanson, Jodie Ahern, John Ilg, Jon Neuse, John Schuerman, Mike Norman, Philip Rickey, Harriet Bart, Dan Wilson, Anne Labovitz, Joyce Lyon, Jaron Childs, Tom Maakestad and Larry Welo.

Pictures from a Trip

In this summer-long group exhibition, over 35 Groveland artists present paintings, prints and drawings inspired by their travels. From the North Shore of Minnesota to the American Southwest, Paris and beyond, this show highlights the unique perspective artists call upon as they immerse themselves in a new landscape.

Wendell Arneson

Opening Reception: Saturday, April 25, 2-5 p.m.

Known for his expressionist oil paintings, Wendell Arneson continues to explore themes of iconography and spirituality. Included in this exhibition will be large, exuberant canvases as well as a series of small, intense oil on paper paintings. Arneson’s bold, primary color palette and expressive brushwork combine to invigorate the paintings. Provocative figures, mysterious symbols and Cubist-like compositions draw viewers in, heightening their sense of inquiry.
