House & Universe
.
Michael Banning’s current body of work focuses on the artist’s house as both a refuge from the world outside as well as a universe within itself. Banning offers the intimate spaces of his home and the bird’s-eye views it affords of the surrounding Minneapolis neighborhood as simple meditations on the idea of interiority. While many of the paintings focus on views of the rooftops and trees outside, others dwell upon the mystery and overlooked beauty of well-worn doorknobs, radiators and floors. What unites these various images of home and place are their palpable sense of light and the uncanny quality that they exist in a perpetually unfolding space between familiarity and strangeness.
