Paula Gustafson

“I chase the light like many before me, a tradition and obsession. I am constantly looking for that visual spark whether I am actively painting or just going about my general activities. In this way I am always painting.”

At the age of six she decided to end her art career because a group of kids laughed hysterically at a drawing she had done of her family. As she remembers the picture, drawn in crayon, Paula recalls an expressionist approach or one that a psychiatrist might have found worthy of further investigation. She decided to retired at age six, never to make art again.

She did not retire but after a few year break restarted her painting career at the age of 13. Painting has been an integral part of her life from that point forward.

Until recently, she has had a nine year “vacation” painting in Grand Marais Minnesota. Her primary subject for many years as been painting outdoors in the landscape, Plein Air. Water and rocks have dominated her inspiration and subject.

Her work is in numerous private collections.
