11th Annual Plein Air Smackdown
Plein Air Smackdown has become a favorite summer tradition for artists, collectors, and the broader Twin Cities art community. The exhibition of paintings created during the event will remain on view through August 8, 2026.
Groveland Gallery proudly announces its 11th Annual Plein Air Smackdown, presented in collaboration with Outdoor Painters of Minnesota. One of the gallery’s most anticipated annual events, the Plein Air Smackdown brings together regional artists for a day of outdoor painting throughout the Lowry Hill and Loring Park neighborhoods before returning to the gallery to exhibit and sell their completed works.
Painting en plein air allows artists to work directly from observation, responding to natural light, atmosphere, and their surroundings. Visitors are invited to explore the neighborhood throughout the day, watch artists at work, and experience the process of creating a painting from start to finish.
Artists will gather at Groveland Gallery before heading out to paint within a half-mile of the gallery. They will return between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. with freshly completed paintings, which will be exhibited and available for purchase beginning at 2:00 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to meet the artists, enjoy refreshments, and be among the first to view and purchase work created just hours earlier.
Now in its eleventh year, the Plein Air Smackdown has become a favorite summer tradition for artists, collectors, and the broader Twin Cities art community. The exhibition of paintings created during the event will remain on view through August 8, 2026.
Participating Groveland Gallery artists include Richard Abraham, Fred Anderson, Carl Bretzke, Christopher Copeland, Joshua Cunningham, Allison Ecklund, Paula Gustafson, Brock Larson, Stuart Loughridge, Dan Mackerman, Tom Maakestad, Dan McAvey, Scott Lloyd Anderson, and Bob Upton, joined by invited members of Outdoor Painters of Minnesota.
Groveland Gallery is located just up the hill from the Walker Art Center at 25 Groveland Terrace, with convenient off-street parking, free weekend street parking, and a short walk from the Walker’s underground parking ramp.
