October 22 - November 26, 2016

Visits & Revisits

Opening Reception: Saturday, October 22, 2-5 p.m.

With a rich color palette and a loose, painterly style, DeCoster’s vibrant landscapes create a narrative of her journeys, weaving together images from memory and her everyday life. Her aesthetic inspirations vary, from her summertime home on the St. Croix River, the Midwestern prairie, childhood trips to Wisconsin and her lifelong relationship with Lake Superior. Life and work have provided DeCoster with abundant reflections.

This diverse body of images reflects this mature artist’s keen understanding of time and place. As DeCoster explains: “Age and change keep me aware that time is precious and fleeting. Nothing stays the same from moment to moment; all is evolving. Yet there is an underlying solidity too. I want both of these thoughts to be suggested in my work, and I want it to reflect the energy and vitality of life.”

A well-known Minnesota artist and St. Paul native, DeCoster has exhibited extensively throughout the Midwest for over 35 years. Her paintings are part of numerous private, public and corporate collections including Securian, Target Corporation, 3M, St. Paul Foundation, Wells Fargo, Dain Bosworth, the Weisman Art Museum and the Mayo Clinic. DeCoster has taught at Hamline University, was a visiting artist at Macalester and St. Olaf Colleges and was a resident artist at Concordia College. She currently divides her time between her studio in the Midway neighborhood of St. Paul and her studio-home overlooking the St. Croix River.

The artist will be present at the opening reception on Saturday, October 22 from 2 to 5 p.m. The exhibition runs concurrently with Gravity, an exhibition of paintings by Carol Lee Chase in the main gallery. Both exhibitions continue through November 26.
