Where Do I Begin

Where Do I Begin, a SPOTLIGHT exhibition of new paintings by Greg Graham, opens December 7th at Groveland Gallery.  Graham grew up in Watervliet, New York. He received his BA and MA from the State University of New York at Albany, and his MFA from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Graham has been the recipient of numerous awards, including grants from the Jerome Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board. He lives and works in Saint Paul.

Graham is known for his intimate, postcard-sized paintings which depict everyday events and ordinary places, bestowing a simple nobility on the awkward and sometimes graceless intersections of humanity and city life.  These miniature paintings are snapshots of the everyday occurrences that rarely register in our consciousness. Of this new body of work, Graham says: “These paintings are storyboards. Dreams, personal experiences and conversations are reimagined employing ellipsis, parallel perspectives and flashbacks. This best reflects how my memory works – drifting like a motorboat with its engine cut.” Graham’s keen ability to isolate a place and capture a snippet of time brings life to his paintings.
